Do we need a new browser? If you ask me, i would say yes.Arguably , firefox is one amongst the best right now in terms of speed, security and customisability. Opera might be the fastest browser. But still nothing is complete. Yesterday google released the first beta of their bowser Google Chrome. I was really looking forward to it . Now when you first look at it , it appears so neat and simple.I got the same kind of feeling when we look at google home page, though it appears so simple a lot of advanced features are there for the taking.
The setup file of google chrome is little under 500kb and while installing it downloads additional files required. Then it quickly imported all my favorites, saved passwords, search engines and browsing history both from ie and firefox. The features of google chrome worth mentioning are
- An all in one url bar - it suggests and also you can also do a search in your specified search engine and also search in your history
- Dynamic tabs - supports tabbed browsing and also you can drag a tab into a new window. Also each tab opened runs a separate process so that if one of the tab crashes, it doesnt effect the other and tabs run independent of each other.Since a new process appears for each new tab that you open, chrome has made it easy to manage all the processes associated with it using the Task Manager (Shift+Esc is the shortcut and it can be accesed via page menu=>developer=>Task Manager)
- Incognito mode - When browsing in this mode, browsing history, temporary files and cookies are deleted once you exit the browser ,this offers you more privacy.
- Safe browsing - a phishing and malware site warner
- Create application shortcuts - Create shortcuts to your favorite site to be accessible from desktop or any location. To do this select “create application shortcuts” from the page menu
Considering the competition it faces, it is faster than opera and firefox when i tested on a few sites . Also , it uses a lot lesser memory. When i browsed using a single tab Chrome used about 50% less memory. This can be verified by using typing “about:memory” in the url bar .The RSS in built reader is missing.Hopefully we get to see it integrated in the consequent releases.Though it doesnt presently support the same kind of customisability that firefox does , its still in beta stages and theres a lot to come, atleast thats what they claim.
A final word on Google Chrome beta - its real good for a beta, runs really smoothly and impressed me a lot on the memory usage as well as the speed. If you are a techie, do use it its fun. But presently depending on it completely might not be a wise thing to do.Anyway it has a lot to offer and i will keep it all covered ! If you have anything to share about your expereince do tell us.
